regarding comment #9 above from Kalel:

The cap in that picture was indeed dried up and bulging. I pulled it out
and replaced it with another similar. It got WARM. I pulled that out
and measured the voltage. It was exactly 5.0 BUT THE WRONG POLARITY !!!

Dell had it installed backwards !!! That's why that cap is going bad.
So on my motherboard, the silk screened ground (negative) indicator
(the white ink which is closest to the small 3v battery) is positive.

As a double check, the other lead (supposed to be positive) is a zero
ohm continutity to the case, which confirms that it was installed (and
indicated on the motherboard) backwards !!!

----------

Yip, replace that bulging capacitor and it will solve the problem. We have about 150 of these units on our campus and have had about 15 fail so far, 10 were still in the 3 year period that Dell were covering them for, the rest we have had to repair ourselves. The capacitor is 6.3volt 2200microfarad 105degree electrolytic. If you do it yourself it will cost you all of about $5 for the cap (NZ$). Otherwise you will be paying a 30min minimum charge no doubt for an electronics shop to do it for you. These caps are polarised, so be sure to put the new one in around the right way else it WILL go bang! Check these shots for more detail -

I work on these systems daily as Apple Techs send them to me. Most systems have a bad capacitor or two. When I repair them I change all the capacitors on the system no matter what they look like or if you had it serviced before. The capacitors I use are tested good with 100,000 run hours against them with a 20 percent give or take on the tolerances. If you have a question you can call 706-307-9689 or visit http://www.doubleclickittofixit.com.

This is a brief list of the systems we repair on a regular basis: GX150, SX150, GX240, SX240, GX260, SX260, GX270, SX270, GX280, SX280, GX520, SX520, GX620, SX620, Dimension 2400, Dimension 8400, iMac 17 inch and 20 inch, 661-3613, 661-3611, 661-3599, 661-3596, 661-3597, 661-3612, 661-4290, 661-3599, 661-3787, 661-3595, 661-3778, 661-3597, M9248LL, M9249LL.

If you want the kits to do the repair yourself, you can buy them here at http://www.doubleclickittofixit.com/kits.html

Hello.
I also have a Optiplex SX280. Mtherboard has died and I replaced two faulty capacitors on it.
Now I have the following problem:
It boots up showing the Dell splash screen with Press F2 for boot sequence or F12 for setup. But it won't take the command.
It goes to the next step showing a black screen with a blinking line and gets stuck there. The fans run faster and faster till they get to full throttle.
Has anyone else had this symptoms?
